01 / 10AI SKILL / Cliffhangers

Write a cliffhanger with AI. Give the next episode a reason to exist.

An ending with somewhere to go next.

Your AI Director uses the Cliffhanger Skill to shape the final beat, choose what to reveal and propose where to cut. Describe the tension you want; the skill works out the story mechanics behind it.

AI SKILL / ILLUSTRATIVE
Choose an illustrative skill example
YOU DESCRIBE THE INTENTION

End with Anaya about to discover who sent the letter.

Fictional Anaya and Kabir scene beside a train at night, used to explain production direction
  1. 01

    Recognise the handwriting

  2. 02

    Hear the knock

  3. 03

    Hold the answer

Cut before she names the sender.

THE AI SKILL ADDS THE DIRECTION

Reveal
Let recognition reach her face first.
Framing
Move from the letter to a held close-up.
Payoff
Open the next episode on her decision.

Fictional examples and illustrative artwork. Switching examples shows prepared direction, not a live generation or an approved production.

01 / You bring

The story so far and the feeling you want to leave behind.

02 / The skill prepares

An ending beat, a proposed cut point and a next-episode payoff.

FROM INTENTION TO DIRECTION

You do not have to speak production.

Say what the scene should achieve in your own words. The AI Skill translates that intention into craft decisions your AI Director can carry into the plan, storyboard and production.

  1. 01

    Describe the result.

A feeling, a scene, a character or a campaign objective. Start with what you want the audience to experience.

  2. 02

Let the skill work out the craft.

It prepares the relevant choices: where to place the subject, how to frame and light it, what to hear and when to cut.

  3. 03

    Carry the direction into production.

Your AI Director applies the skill within your creative canon, selected format and production scope.

Review creative preparation yourself, or use Auto mode for the story and asset preparation you choose to delegate. Rights clearance, rendering costs and final delivery retain their approval requirements.

INSIDE THIS AI SKILL

The craft behind its decisions.

These are the principles and procedures the skill applies. You can understand the reasoning without having to perform every production task yourself.

A shock makes people jump. A question makes them tap.

The episode-to-episode conversion number does not reward surprise. It rewards an unanswered question about someone the viewer has decided to care about.

01 / Cliffhangers

Shock, question, and the difference

A shockSomething happens
  • A gunshot, a crash, a body
  • Resolvable by any explanation
  • Works once, then trains distrust
  • Requires no prior investment
  • The viewer's question is "what was that"
A cliffhangerSomeone has to choose
  • A door opens and she sees who it is
  • Only one answer is satisfying
  • Compounds across a season
  • Only works because of prior investment
  • The viewer's question is "what will she do"

The test is whether the ending would work on a stranger. If it would, it is a shock, and it is doing none of the work a serialized ending exists to do. A cliffhanger should be almost meaningless to someone who has not watched the previous episodes, because its force comes entirely from what they already know.

02 / Cliffhangers

A method that works in 90 seconds

  1. 01
Name the question the season is asking

One sentence. Everything else is a variation on it, and an ending that does not touch it is an ending about something else.

  2. 02
    Decide what this episode changed

An episode that changes nothing cannot end on anything. If you cannot name the change, the problem is upstream of the ending.

  3. 03
Find the character who now has to act

The change created a pressure. Someone is holding it. That person is the subject of your last shot.

  4. 04
Cut one beat before the decision

Not after the decision, and not three beats before. The frame where the choice becomes unavoidable and has not yet been made.

  5. 05
Check it against the knowledge state

The ending has to be impossible to predict and obvious in hindsight, which means it must rest on something the audience knows and a character does not, or the reverse.

  6. 06
Write the first eight seconds of the next episode

If you cannot, the ending is a trick. A cliffhanger you cannot pay off is a promise you have already broken.

03 / Cliffhangers

The four endings that do not work

The false threat
Peril resolved in the first ten seconds of the next episode. Audiences learn this fast and stop believing endings, which costs you every subsequent one.
The withheld fact
A character knows something and simply will not say it, for no reason except the episode length. This reads as the writer hiding rather than the character choosing.
The unearned reveal
A twist resting on information the audience never had. Surprising, unsatisfying, and impossible to re-watch.
The resolution
The episode ends with everything settled. Common in adapted work, because chapters and episodes break in different places.
Fictional exampleThe door opens

Anaya has just learned that the letter's handwriting belongs to someone she trusts. A knock at the door.

Season question
What is her family hiding, and who helped
This episode changed
She can now identify the handwriting
Who must act
Anaya - open it, or do not
Cut point
Her hand on the latch, recognition already on her face

To a stranger this is a woman answering a door. To a viewer of episodes one to three it is unbearable, which is the whole point. The next episode opens on the eight seconds that pay it.

Questions about this skill

Can the AI Director plan the cliffhanger for me?

Yes. Describe the story and the tension you want to leave unresolved. The Cliffhanger Skill prepares the ending beat, cut point and next-episode payoff for your AI Director. You can shape the creative direction without having to work out every writing technique yourself.

Does every episode need a cliffhanger?

Every episode needs a reason to watch the next one, which is not always a cliffhanger. Sometimes it is an unresolved emotional state, or a question the audience is asking rather than a character. What no episode can afford is ending on resolution, because resolution is permission to stop.

How long should the ending be?

In a 60 to 120 second episode, the last few seconds. Long enough for the moment to land and not a beat longer - a held ending gives the viewer time to decide they are finished.

How do I know if my cliffhanger works?

Episode-to-episode conversion, measured on a published pilot arc. Internal opinion about a cliffhanger is famously unreliable, which is part of why the pilot arc exists before a season is authorized.

Can I plan cliffhangers before writing the scripts?

Yes, and you should. The season beat sheet places the hook and the ending for each episode before the scripts exist, because an episode written without knowing where it stops usually stops in the wrong place.

Do cliffhangers work for branded campaigns?

Yes, with a lighter hand. A branded arc still has to earn the next asset, but an audience that feels manipulated by a brand reacts differently to one that feels teased by a drama. The pull is usually curiosity about the character rather than jeopardy.
