What is Gemini Deep Research and how does it differ from a normal Gemini chat?
Gemini Deep Research is an agent-style research mode: instead of answering straight away, it writes a multi-point research plan, searches and browses the web step by step, shows its reasoning as it goes and then writes a detailed report. Google's overview describes four stages: plan, browse, reason and report.
A normal Gemini chat suits quick questions and drafting. Deep Research suits questions that need many sources weighed together, such as a market scan, a policy comparison or background reading before a big meeting. Google's help page says a report usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes. For Gemini in general, including everyday prompting and data settings, see the Gemini tutorial linked below.
Who can use Gemini Deep Research?
Google's help page says you must be 18 or over and signed in to the Gemini app. Its overview page says Deep Research is available in 150 countries, in more than 45 languages, on desktop and mobile, and to Google Workspace users, while noting that compatibility and availability vary.
There are limits on how many research requests you can make each day and how many can run at once, and Gemini tells you when you are close to the daily limit. Google states that Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers get higher limits, and that visuals such as charts and diagrams in reports need Google AI Ultra. If you use a work account, your organisation's Workspace settings decide what is available to you.
How do you run Gemini Deep Research step by step?
You start Deep Research from the Gemini text box, choose your sources, submit a question, review the plan Gemini proposes and then start the research. These steps follow Google's Gemini Apps help page.
1. Open Deep Research
Go to gemini.google.com, click Add files in the text box and choose Deep Research.
2. Add files if useful
Through Add files, then Files, you can include your own documents or an image. Only use material you are allowed to share.
3. Choose sources
Click Sources. Google Search is included by default. Gmail and Drive appear only if the Google Workspace app is connected to Gemini.
4. Write the brief and submit
Gemini responds with a research plan rather than an answer.
5. Edit the plan
Click Edit plan to add, remove or refocus steps before anything runs.
6. Start research and open the report
Click Start research. When it finishes, click Open to read the report in the Canvas panel.
What is a good first Gemini Deep Research exercise?
Use a fictional 12-person UK company, Burrow & Bloom, which sells refillable cleaning products online and is considering selling in Ireland. Its operations lead wants background before a planning meeting.
Weak brief: 'Research selling cleaning products in Ireland.' The plan that comes back is broad: market size, competitors, trends, marketing. The report will be long and generic.
Strong brief: 'I am preparing for a decision on whether a small UK online seller of refillable household cleaning products should start shipping to Ireland. Focus on three things: labelling and product safety rules that apply to household cleaning products sold in Ireland, customs and VAT considerations for a UK seller shipping to Irish consumers, and which official bodies publish this guidance. Prefer official government and regulator sources. List anything you could not confirm.' Then, at the plan stage, delete any step about market size and add 'Identify which rules changed in the last two years'. A focused plan gives a report you can check in the time you have.
How do you check the sources in a Deep Research report?
Check a Deep Research report by opening the sources behind every claim you intend to rely on and confirming the page says what the report says. Google's own overview carries the reminder to check responses, and a long, well-written report can make a weak claim look settled.
Start with the claims that matter
Mark the five statements your decision depends on and check those first, rather than reading every citation.
Prefer primary sources
For rules and regulations, follow the trail to the regulator or government page, not a blog that summarises it.
Check dates
Rules and prices change. Note the date on each source and whether a newer version exists.
Look for what is missing
Ask a follow-up: 'Which parts of my question did you find weak or conflicting evidence for?'
How do you export or share a Deep Research report?
In the Canvas panel, click Share & export, then choose Share Canvas to share the report, Export to Docs to save it as a Google Doc or Copy contents to paste the text elsewhere. Google's help page also describes creating an Audio Overview from the Canvas panel with Create, then Audio Overview, which is useful for a commute but not a substitute for checking the sources.
Google notes that you can find past reports only if your Keep Activity setting is on. Exporting the checked version to Docs, with your own notes on what you verified, gives you a record that does not depend on that setting.
Where does Gemini Deep Research fall short?
Deep Research is only as good as the sources it finds and the question you give it. It can rely on secondary summaries, miss paywalled or very recent material and present uncertain findings fluently. It cannot tell you whether Burrow & Bloom should expand; that judgement depends on margins, capacity and appetite for risk that no web page holds. Treat the report as a well-organised starting point for reading, not as advice.
How does Tosheo.ai teach research with Gemini Deep Research?
Tosheo.ai uses Deep Research in research-heavy lessons, such as competitor research for product teams and supplier comparisons for operations. The learner writes the brief, edits the plan and then checks a set number of claims against their sources, using fictional scenarios supplied in the lesson. The rubric marks the focus of the brief, the plan edits and the quality of the source checks, with specific feedback you can flag for review. Lessons take 10 to 15 minutes, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial with no credit card needed.
