What is Gamma and what is it good for at work?
Gamma creates presentations, documents, webpages and social content with AI. Its help centre describes three ways to start from Create New AI: Generate from a topic, Paste your own notes for Gamma to lay out, or Import a PowerPoint, document or URL. Its Agent takes a conversational route, asking questions and showing a plan before it builds, with Plan, Express and Research modes.
At work it turns existing material into a clean first deck fast, such as a client briefing or training session. It is weakest when the content is not yet decided, because a polished deck can hide a thin argument.
How do I get started with Gamma?
Sign up, open the dashboard and choose Create New AI, then pick Generate, Paste or Import. For work, Paste is usually the best first choice, because you start from facts you have already checked. Gamma's help centre also lets you choose no images or image placeholders if you want to add your own visuals later, and change the theme at any time from Theme in the top right.
Before you add client material, open Settings and the Data Controls tab. Gamma's help centre says individual plans are set by default to allow your content to be used to train AI models and can opt out there, while Teams, Business and Enterprise workspaces are always opted out.
A 10-minute Gamma starter tutorial
The example is fictional. Ruth is a partner at Moss and Lane, a fictional eight-person accounting practice. She is briefing clients on a new way of submitting expense receipts and has half a page of checked notes.
Minutes 0 to 2: paste, do not generate
She chooses Paste and adds her notes with an instruction: six slides, keep my wording for the steps and dates exactly as written, plain layout, image placeholders only.
Minutes 2 to 4: review the structure
She checks the slide order matches how a client will act: why it is changing, what to do, by when, where to get help. She moves one slide in the filmstrip.
Minutes 4 to 6: edit with AI on one slide
On the busiest slide she uses the sparkle icon: turn this into three short steps, keep the deadline and email address unchanged. She uses the Original and Modified toggle to compare before accepting.
Minutes 6 to 8: restyle
She asks for a restyle to the practice's colours rather than regenerating, so the content stays put.
Minutes 8 to 10: export and check
She exports to PowerPoint with All cards selected, opens the file and checks fonts, dates and the contact address. Gamma notes exports reflect Present mode and may differ slightly from the editor.
How do I get better results from Gamma?
Good Gamma decks start from your content and use AI for structure and design, not substance.
Say when your text is final
Gamma's own guidance for its Agent is to say you already have finished text so it builds around it instead of rewriting it.
Spend time on the plan
In Plan mode the Agent shows the story, style and look before building, and Gamma says time on the plan usually saves revisions.
Scope AI edits narrowly
Select one slide or element rather than the whole deck. Gamma says all changes from one request apply together, so a narrow request is easier to review.
Restyle instead of regenerating
To change the look without touching the content, ask for a restyle.
Check Research mode citations
If you let Gamma pull web sources, open each one before the deck goes out.
What should I not put into Gamma, and what do its data terms say?
Do not upload client financials, personal data or unreleased plans unless your employer has cleared Gamma for them and you are working in the right workspace. Check the sharing settings before you send a link or publish a gamma as a webpage, so client material reaches only the people it should. Follow your company's policy on AI tools and client data first.
Gamma's help centre says the Data Controls setting decides whether your content is used to train its AI features. Individual plans default to allowing training and can opt out under Settings, Data Controls; Teams, Business and Enterprise workspaces are excluded from training automatically. Its DMCA page explains how copyright owners can report content and request takedowns, so do not import other people's decks or images you have no right to use.
Where does Gamma fall short?
Gamma produces confident layouts whether or not the content is right. Generate mode can invent figures to fill a slide, so check anything built from a topic alone. Exports can differ from the editor: Gamma's help centre notes that Google Slides substitutes its own fonts for embedded ones, and that very long gammas may need splitting to export.
It also does not replace a strict brand template. If your company requires a specific PowerPoint master, building in PowerPoint with Copilot may be simpler, and free-plan exports carry a Made by Gamma badge according to its help centre.
